Fall 2011 crew members not only work alongside crew chiefs and U.S. Forest Service personnel to maintain trails and campgrounds, clean up the watershed, and remove noxious weeds from forest lands, but also earn school credit through the Olympic Peninsula Skills Center by completing written assignments and field projects.
So far this fall, members have:
- completed a challenge course to practice leadership skills
- participated in campground maintenance at Seal Rock Campground
- coordinated a cleanup for National Public Lands Day in the "Big Quilcene" watershed
- devised and implemented a plan to remove noxious weeds
- built and maintained trails along Notch Pass
Youth are learning about public land management, 'Leave No Trace', noxious weeds and native plants, ecosystems, salmon and marine-derived nutrients, leadership patterns and portfolio creation. They also learn about teamwork and building a strong work ethic to prepare for future work opportunities.
